The residents of Lagos took to the streets on March 12 to protest the ongoing inconsistent and unreliable power supply that has left many homes and businesses in the state struggling.
The demonstration, which is currently unfolding in Fadeyi, Lagos State, saw protesters marching through the streets, ringing bells, and singing slogans to draw attention to their plight.
Many chants centered on the demand for consistent electricity, with protesters shouting, “All we are saying, give us freedom!” and “We’re not asking for too much, make them give us light!” The crowd echoed these sentiments with repeated cries of, “Give us light, give us light!”
In addition to their chants, protesters carried placards highlighting the depth of frustration across the state. One sign read, “No more epileptic power supply,” while another demanded, “Give us regular light. Say no to touch light of Ikeja Electric.” Other placards warned of the economic impact, with messages such as, “You are destroying, k!lling so many businesses. Please, give us light,” and “No light, no life, no nation, no try & error.” Some also expressed opposition to inaccurate billing, calling for an end to “estimated billing.”
The protest reflects growing frustrations among Nigerians, who have increasingly taken to social media in recent days to express concerns over the persistent lack of electricity. These issues have been further exacerbated by rising fuel prices, making the cost of running generators to compensate for power outages even more burdensome.
The demonstrators’ actions underscore the urgent need for stable and reliable electricity supply in Lagos, highlighting the impact that inconsistent power has on daily life, business operations, and the overall economy.
