Four persons have been killed by gunmen suspected to be cult members in Swali community, Bayelsa State.
A community source who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Tuesday, April 22, said that the gunmen invaded the community from the nearby river on Sunday, April 20, 2025 and attacked innocent residents who had just celebrated Easter in their various churches.
He said many people also sustained injuries from the attack, while several residents had relocated from the community for fear of another attack.
Swali community hosts the biggest market in Bayelsa State, and the waterfront where residents travel to other parts of the state. It is also close to the government house.
The spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, who confirmed the attack, said security had been beefed up to restore normalcy to the community.
He said the attack might not be related to cult clashes, but measures were in place to forestall any further breakdown of law.
One of those k!lled in the attack has been identified as Comrade Agada Bonkien, a former PRO of the National Union of Epie-Attissa Students.
