Our attention has been drawn to various sponsored claims on social media regarding the administration of Ijebuland during the vacancy. According to tradition, when the Awujale stool becomes vacant, the OLISA of IJEBU ODE takes over as the de facto ruler of Ijebuland until a new Awujale is installed. It is on record that the incumbent Olisa of Ijebu Ode, is the 63rd Olisa on the throne. He rules Ijebu Ode from his palace “Ilisa” situated at Olisa Street, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Key Points about the Awujale Succession Process:
- The Four Ruling Houses: The Awujale of Ijebuland rotates among four ruling houses: Gbelegbuwa, Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote.
- Selection Process: The selection of a new Awujale involves the Awujale Ruling Houses and the kingmakers (Afobaje) and follows the Chiefs Law of 1957.
- Current Situation: The Olisa of Ijebu Ode, as the next in command, has began to oversee the transition process and ensure stability in Ijebuland.
- Ogbeni Oja is neither an hereditary nor Royal title and in accordance with Ijebu tradition has no palace but at the service of the Awujale. He is a member of the Ilamuren Society under the Olisa. Page 50 of Ojude Oba 2024 Brochure refers.
Regarding the claim that Ogbeni Oja, Dr. Sunny Kuku has become the Regent of Ijebuland, We wish to inform the general public that it is a sponsored propaganda fueld by overambitious elements and therefore it is essential to verify information through official channels to avoid spreading misinformation at the mourning period of our revered Awujale Adetona. As emphasized by the Council of Awujale Ruling Houses, the authenticity and legitimacy in traditional administration of Ijebuland is important.
Finally, we join the Awujale of Ijebuland Ruling Houses, the Asokutes and Iwaro Ekun societies, Quarter heads, market women, youths and the entire Ijebu people to register our unalloyed loyalty and support to the Oba Oguja Olu-Isa of Ijebu Ode towards a peaceful and successful transition period.
